Who God Is

Who but God could have Invented these Awesome Things!

January 7, 2009 · No Comments

I serve  an awesome God who created the earth and the whole solar system with all the planets. Even after hundreds of years, we are still finding galaxies and planets we never knew existed. What man could have ever thought to invent such marvelous things as those in the photos below?

These photos are from NASA/ESA and The Hubble Heritage Team. They were made by the Hubble Telescope.

nasa_starcluster

This is a star cluster with stars of three age groups. There are approximately 10,000 stars here and this cluster is 13,300 light years away from earth.

nasa-bodes-galaxy

This is Bodes Galaxy. It is 11.6 million light years away from earth, and it is 70,000 light years across its whole galaxy.

nasa-saturn

We all know that Saturn is the closest to earth of the three photos. It is 67 light minutes away, and is 9.5 times wider than earth.

I feel overwhelmed as I look at these photos. God is much deeper and more sovereign than we could ever imagine. The whole universe is delicately balanced in his hands.

So if  He has “the whole world in His hands” as the children song says, can’t you trust Him to handle your problems?

Think about His Majesty and Awesomeness the next time you look up at the night sky!

Have you Lost your Sense of Wonder?

January 6, 2009 · No Comments

old-and-young1

old-and-young2

As we get older, it is easy to lose the sense of wonder about things you see everyday because you start to take them for granted. Children get excited about doing just the plain, ordinary things of everyday life and we love to see the world through their eyes.

It is also easy to put God in a box and expect Him to act only in certain ways that you might be accustomed to.  He has the whole universe at His disposal and can use any person or circumstance to answer your prayer or meet your need.

As God has been working in my life the last few years, He has led me down roads that I would never have thought about going on my own. I have been filled with much wonder and amazement at how He has brought things together. It is an awesome  feeling when you know you are in the center of God’s Will for your life.

Suddenly your own plans don’t seem as important as they once were. You feel as if you are part of something much greater than anything you could ever conjure up on your own. You also get so excited that God would choose you to do something for Him. After all, He could have chosen anyone, but He chose YOU. What an honor!

When you can reach this point, your childhood wonder will have returned about everyday life. It won’t be boring and mundane any more because God will definitely encourage you to trust and prove Him to see what He can and will do in your life.

Try it and see what happens!

Great Advice for Living

January 3, 2009 · 1 Comment

I received this in an email and think it is great advice to live by.

God has been convicting me about simplifying my life and getting rid of all the clutter in my house. It is easy to collect stuff, and before you know it you have way too much of it, not to mention all the time it takes to clean it.

Of course #14 is and has always been great advice. There are way too many times when I should have heeded it and didn’t.

God has also made me aware that laughter is something I should not push aside. There are so many bad things in the world today that it is easy to get down about life in general. It is a wonderful feeling to have a good “belly laugh” about something. It lightens your whole mood for awhile. Don’t take life too seriously. Make time to laugh.

God dealt with me about the issue of saying no to things that won’t fit in my schedule a few years ago. I had a lot of guilt at first, but now I pray about the matter and if God says NO, I don’t feel guilty any more. I know that He has bigger and better plans for me and I want to be a good steward of my time.

I have also learned to be more grateful for the wonderful blessings God has given me. Being grateful also changes your life in other areas for the better.

Read this list, pray about it, and see if God reveals any areas where you need change. God wants you to be a vessel He can work through to accomplish great things for His Kingdom.

GREAT ADVICE FOR LIVING

Never borrow from the future. If you worry about what may happen tomorrow and it doesn’t happen, you have worried in vain. Even if it does happen, you have to worry twice.

1. Pray
2. Go to bed on time.
3. Get up on time so you can start the day unrushed.
4. Say No to projects that won’t fit into your time schedule, or that will compromise your mental health.

5. Delegate tasks to capable others.
6. Simplify and unclutter your life.
7. Less is more. (Although one is often not enough, two are often too many.)
8. Allow extra time to do things and to get to places.

9. Pace yourself. Spread out big changes and difficult projects over time; don’t lump the hard things all together.
10. Take one day at a time.
11. Separate worries from concerns . If a situation is a concern, find out what God would have you do and let go of the anxiety . If you can’t do anything about a situation, forget it.
12. Live within your budget; don’t use credit cards for ordinary purchases.

13. Have backups; an extra car key in your wallet, an extra house key buried in the garden, extra stamps, etc.
14. K.M.S. (Keep Mouth Shut). This single piece of advice can prevent an enormous amount of trouble.
15. Do something for the Kid in You everyday.

16. Carry a Bible with you to read while waiting in line.
17. Get enough rest.
18. Eat right.
19. Get organized so everything has its place.

20. Listen to a tape while driving that can help improve your quality of life.
21. Write down thoughts and inspirations.
22. Every day, find time to be alone.
23. Having problems? Talk to God on the spot. Try to nip small problems in the bud. Don’t wait until it’s time to go to bed to try and pray.
24. Make friends with Godly people.

25. Keep a folder of favorite scriptures on hand.
26. Remember that the shortest bridge between despair and hope is often a good ‘Thank you Jesus .’
27. Laugh.
28. Laugh some more!
29. Take your work seriously, but not yourself at all.
30. Develop a forgiving attitude (most people are doing the best they can).

31. Be kind to unkind people (they probably need it the most).
32. Sit on your ego.
33. Talk less; listen more.
34. Slow down.
35. Remind yourself that you are not the general manager of the universe.
36 Every night before bed, think of one thing you’re grateful for that you’ve never been grateful for before.

GOD HAS A WAY OF TURNING THINGS AROUND FOR YOU.

‘If God is for us, who can be against us?’
(Romans 8:31)

Don’t Settle for Less than God’s Best

December 31, 2008 · No Comments

websanddollar1

How many times have you settled for something that looked good to you and missed the awesome thing that would have been God’s Best.

Just like the picture, they are so focused on the small thing that they are missing the much bigger and better thing that is right behind them.

God has a great plan for your life, but you must focus on Him in order to find out what it is. You cannot look at any situation with your limited vision and determine the right thing to do. God may want you to do something you have never even thought about. After all, you are not capable on your own of seeing the big picture and how everything fits together.

God wants to be able to tell you to do something that you are definitely not capable of doing on your own. Then He will get all the credit and glory for it. This can be a scary place until you realize that you can truly trust Him with your life. He looks down at you and just wants you to let Him take care of all the details.

The Holy Spirit wants to lead you in decisions you make each day.  Don’t try to do it alone any more and don’t settle for anything less than God’s Best for your life.

I recently received this in an email and thought it was too good not to post. You can never go wrong when your foundation is based upon God’s Word. The Christmas Story of 1881

December 27, 2008 · No Comments

The Christmas Story of 1881

Pa never had much compassion for the lazy or those who squandered their means and then never had enough for the necessities. But for those who were genuinely in need, his heart was as big as all outdoors. It was from him that I learned the greatest joy in life comes from giving, not from receiving.

It was Christmas Eve 1881. I was fifteen years old and feeling like the world had caved in on me because there just hadn’t been enough money to buy me the rifle that I’d wanted for Christmas. We did the chores early that night for some reason. I just figured Pa wanted a little extra time so we could read in the Bible.

After supper was over I took my boots off and stretched out in front of the fireplace and waited for Pa to get down the old Bible. I was still feeling sorry for myself and, to be honest, I wasn’t in much of a mood to read Scriptures. But Pa didn’t get the Bible, instead he bundled up again and went outside. I couldn’t figure it out because we had already done all the chores. I didn’t worry about it long though. I was too busy wallowing in self-pity. Soon Pa came back in. It was a cold clear night out and there was ice in his beard.

“Come on, Matt,” he said. “Bundle up good, it’s cold out tonight”

I was really upset then. Not only wasn’t I getting the rifle for Christmas, now Pa was dragging me out in the cold, and for no earthly reason that I could see. We’d already done all the chores, and I couldn’t think of anything else that needed doing, especially not on a night like this. But I knew Pa was not very patient at one dragging one’s feet when he’d told them to do something, so I got up and put my boots back on and got my cap, coat, and mittens. Ma gave me a mysterious smile as I opened the door to leave the house. Something was up, but I didn’t know what.

Outside, I became even more dismayed. There in front of the house was the work team, already hitched to the big sled. Whatever it was we were going to do wasn’t going to be a short, quick, little job. I could tell. We never hitched up this sled unless we were going to haul a big load. Pa was already up on the seat, reins in hand. I reluctantly climbed up beside him. The cold was already biting at me. I wasn’t happy. When I was on, Pa pulled the sled around the house and stopped in front of the woodshed. He got off and I followed. “I think we’ll put on the high sideboards,” he said. Here, help me.” The high sideboards! It had been a bigger job than I wanted to do with just the low sideboards on, but whatever it was we were going to do would be a lot bigger with the high side boards on.

After we had exchanged the sideboards, Pa went into the woodshed and came out with an armload of wood - the wood I’d spent all summer hauling down from the mountain, and then all Fall sawing into blocks and splitting. What was he doing? Finally I said something.

“Pa,” I asked, “what are you doing?”

You been by the Widow Jensen’s lately?” he asked.

The Widow Jensen lived about two miles down the road. Her husband had died a year or so before and left her with three children, the oldest being eight. Sure, I’d been by, but so what?

“Yeah,” I said, “Why?”

“I rode by just today,” Pa said. “Little Jakey was out digging around in the woodpile trying to find a few chips. They’re out of wood, Matt.”

That was all he said and then he turned and went back into the woodshed for another arm load of wood. I followed him. We loaded the sled so high that I began to wonder if the horses would be able to pull it. Finally, Pa called a halt to our loading, then we went to the smoke house and Pa took down a big ham and a side of bacon. He handed them to me and told me to put them in the sled and wait. When he returned he was carrying a sack of flour over his right shoulder and a smaller sack of something in his left hand.

“What’s in the little sack?” I asked.

Shoes, they’re out of shoes. Little Jakey just had gunny sacks wrapped around his feet when he was out in the woodpile this morning. I got the children a little candy too. It just wouldn’t be Christmas without a little candy.”

We rode the two miles to Widow Jensen’s pretty much in silence. I tried to think through what Pa was doing. We didn’t have much by worldly standards. Of course, we did have a big woodpile, though most of what was left now was still in the form of logs that I would have to saw into blocks and split before we could use it. We also had meat and flour, so we could spare that, but I knew we didn’t have any money, so why was Pa buying them shoes and candy? Really, why was he doing any of this? Widow Jensen had closer neighbors than us; it shouldn’t have been our concern.

We came in from the blind side of the Jensen house and unloaded the wood as quietly as possible. Then, we took the meat and flour and shoes to the door. We knocked. The door opened a crack and a timid voice said, “Who is it?”

“Lucas Miles, Ma’am, and my son, Matt, could we come in for a bit?”

Widow Jensen opened the door and let us in. She had a blanket wrapped around her shoulders. The children were wrapped in another and were sitting in front of the fireplace by a very small fire that hardly gave off any heat at all. Widow Jensen fumbled with a match and finally lit the lamp.

“We brought you a few things, Ma’am,” Pa said and set down the sack of flour. I put the meat on the table. Then Pa handed her the sack that had the shoes in it. She opened it hesitantly and took the shoes out one pair at a time. There was a pair for her and one for each of the children - sturdy shoes, the best, shoes that would last. I watched her carefully. She bit her lower lip to keep it from trembling and then tears filled her eyes and started running down her cheeks. She looked up at Pa like she wanted to say something, but it wouldn’t come out.

“We brought a load of wood too, Ma’am,” Pa said. He turned to me and said, “Matt, go bring in enough to last awhile. Let’s get that fire up to size and heat this place up.” I wasn’t the same person when I went back out to bring in the wood. I had a big lump in my throat and as much as I hate to admit it, there were tears in my eyes too. In my mind I kept seeing those three kids huddled around the fireplace and their mother standing there with tears running down her cheeks with so much gratitude in her heart that she couldn’t speak.

My heart swelled within me and a joy that I’d never known before filled my soul. I had given at Christmas many times before, but never when it had made so much difference. I could see we were literally saving the lives of these people.

I soon had the fire blazing and everyone’s spirits soared. The kids started giggling when Pa handed them each a piece of candy and Widow Jensen looked on with a smile that probably hadn’t crossed her face for a long time. She finally turned to us.

“God bless you,” she said. “I know the Lord has sent you. The children and I have been praying that he would send one of his angels to spare us.”

In spite of myself, the lump returned to my throat and the tears welled up in my eyes again. I’d never thought of Pa in those exact terms before, but after Widow Jensen mentioned it I could see that it was probably true. I was sure that a better man than Pa had never walked the earth. I started remembering all the times he had gone out of his way for Ma and me, and many others. The list seemed endless as I thought on it.

Pa insisted that everyone try on the shoes before we left. I was amazed when they all fit and I wondered how he had known what sizes to get. Then I guessed that if he was on an errand for the Lord that the Lord would make sure he got the right sizes.

Tears were running down Widow Jensen’s face again when we stood up to leave. Pa took each of the kids in his big arms and gave them a hug They clung to him and didn’t want us to go. I could see that they missed their Pa, and I was glad that I still had mine.

At the door Pa turned to Widow Jensen and said, “The Mrs. wanted me to invite you and the children over for Christmas dinner tomorrow. The turkey will be more than the three of us can eat, and a man can get cantankerous if he has to eat turkey for too many meals. We’ll be by to get you about eleven. It’ll be nice to have some little ones around again. Matt, here, hasn’t been little for quite a spell.” I was the youngest. My two brothers and two sisters had all married and had moved away.

Widow Jensen nodded and said, “Thank you, Brother Miles. I don’t have to say, may the Lord bless you, I know for certain that He will.”

Out on the sled I felt a warmth that came from deep within and I didn’t even notice the cold. When we had gone a ways, Pa turned to me and said, “Matt, I want you to know something. Your ma and me have been tucking a little money away here and there all year so we could buy that rifle for you, but we didn’t have quite enough. Then yesterday a man who owed me a little money from years back came by to make things square. Your ma and me were real excited, thinking that now we could get you that rifle, and I started into town this morning to do just that, but on the way I saw little Jakey out scratching in the woodpile with his feet wrapped in those gunny sacks and I knew what I had to do. Son, I spent the money for shoes and a little candy for those children. I hope you understand.”

I understood, and my eyes became wet with tears again. I understood very well, and I was so glad Pa had done it. Now the rifle seemed very low on my list of priorities. Pa had given me a lot more. He had given me the look on Widow Jensen’s face and the radiant smiles of her three children.

For the rest of my life, whenever I saw any of the Jensens, or split a block of wood, I remembered, and remembering brought back that same joy I felt riding home beside Pa that night. Pa had given me much more than a rifle that night, he had given me the best Christmas of my life.

Can you Trust God like Mary and Joseph did?

December 24, 2008 · No Comments

What an awesome God we have!

He sent His Only Son Jesus to earth to live as a man so that He could experience the same things we do - only He did all of it without sin.

What kind of faith must Mary and Joseph have had in order to carry forth God’s marvelous plan of salvation. They couldn’t have fully understood everything that was happening, but I marvel at how they just trusted God to take care of every detail.

God works in ways that you won’t always understand. Can you trust Him to bring about His Best for your life even though you can’t see how all the details fit together?

More Humor - Pecans in the Cemetery

December 20, 2008 · No Comments

On the outskirts of a small town, there was a big, old pecan tree
just inside the cemetery fence.

One day, two boys filled up a bucketful of nuts and sat down by the
tree, out of sight, and began dividing the nuts.

“One for you, one for me. One for you, one for me,” said one boy.
Several dropped and rolled down toward the fence.

Another boy came riding along the road on his bicycle. As he
passed, he thought he heard voices from inside the cemetery.
He slowed down to investigate. Sure enough, he heard, “One for
you, one for me. One for you, one for me.”

He just knew what it was. He jumped back on his bike and rode off.
Just around the bend he met an old man with a cane, hobbling along.

“Come here quick,” said the boy, “you won’t believe what I heard!
Satan and the Lord are down at the cemetery dividing up the souls.”

The man said, “Beat it kid, can’t you see it’s hard for me to walk.”

When the boy insisted though, the man hobbled slowly to the cemetery.

Standing by the fence they heard, “One for you, one for me. One
for you, one for me.”

The old man whispered, “Boy, you’ve been tellin’ me the truth.
Let’s see if we can see the Lord.”

Shaking with fear, they peered through the fence, yet were still
unable to see anything. The old man and the boy gripped the wrought
iron bars of the fence tighter and tighter as they tried to get a
glimpse of the Lord.

At last they heard, “One for you, one for me. That’s all. Now let’s go
get those nuts by the fence and we’ll be done.

They say the old man made it back to town a full 5 minutes ahead
of the kid on the bike.

The Power of Prayer

December 16, 2008 · No Comments

A missionary on furlough told this true story while visiting his home church in Michigan…

“While serving at a small field hospital in Africa, every two weeks I traveled by bicycle through the Jungle to a nearby city for supplies.

This was a journey of two days and required camping overnight at the halfway point. On one of these journeys, I arrived in the city where I planned to collect money from a bank, purchase medicine and supplies, and then begin my two-day journey back to the field hospital.

Upon arrival in the city, I observed two men fighting, one of whom had been seriously injured. I treated him for his injuries and at the same time talked to him about the Lord. I then traveled two days, camping overnight, and arrived home without incident.

Two weeks later I repeated my journey. Upon arriving in the city, I was approached by the young man I had treated. He told me that he had known I carried money and medicines.

He said, ‘Some friends and I followed you into the jungle, knowing you would camp overnight.

We planned to kill you and take your money and drugs. But just as we were about to move into your camp, we saw that you were surrounded by 26 armed guards.’

At this, I laughed and said that I was certainly all alone in that jungle campsite. The young man pressed the point, however, and said, ‘No sir, I was not the only person to see the guards. My five friends also saw them, and we all counted them.

It was because of those guards that we were afraid and left you alone.’”

What an awesome God of protection we have!

Each Moment is Your Life

December 11, 2008 · No Comments

happy-moment

You live your life one moment at a time, so you really can choose how you will spend each one. We generally look at time in chunks or blocks, not moments, so it is easy to forget the potential of every sixty seconds.

Give God control and you will be amazed at what He can accomplish through you.  A life lived for Him will truly bring you happiness as you live in each moment.
