Let your words be better than silence!

“Be quiet, unless your speech be better than silence.”

Rosa Salvator

This is a self portrait of Rosa Salvator (1615 – 1673) from the 17th century. It’s unusual for its age as the Latin quote is actually in the painting. This was painted about 1645. National Gallery – London

I know that I just posted a powerful video on this very subject, but it is one that we need to keep before us at all times.

This is a very powerful quote, but it is especially powerful for the Christian. There are some passages in the Bible that give clear instruction on how we should use our tongues.

Proverbs 18:21Death and life are in the power of the tongue: and they that love it shall eat the fruit thereof.

Proverbs 21:23Whoso keepeth his mouth and his tongue keepeth his soul from troubles.

I know there have been many times in my life where I spoke words and then regretted it, sometimes almost the instant they came out of my mouth. Then I would beat myself up for awhile by saying,”Why do I do and say things that I know I shouldn’t!”

We all could be much wiser and have a lot less regret if we just thought before we spoke. Ask God to help you do that everyday. He truly will put a thought in your head that says, “Don’t do it – Don’t speak it!” At that point, you have only a second to decide whether you will follow that advice or go ahead and feed your flesh ego, only to regret it later. When you are very animated about something, it is so easy to disregard that small voice and continue to go in the same direction. Ask God to give you strength to always think first before you speak about something you are unsure of.

There are times when you need to stand up and speak out, but God can lead you in those times also so that you can speak with authority and with His Power upon you. You can accomplish much more by doing things God’s Way.

Post this quote in a place where you will see it often to be a reminder that silence is truly better than saying something you will regret, plus we all want to produce good fruit, not rotten fruit.

    Hey Cathy -

Again… great thoughts! My wife tells me all the time that I talk too much : ) It is true that God will give you the words – the RIGHT words – and the boldness when yielded to Him…

    Good after noon ,
It’s very interresting to start a essential thinking from the Selfportrait of Salvator painted when he was 25 years old. “Aut tace aut loquere meliora silentio” . This sentence is a part of the Rosa’s life philosophie . This paint was recently use by Muséum Capodimonte for Rosa first exibition in his birth Town Napoli.
His Art power was for Lady Morgan so strong that main of the the English artists in 19 century follow her and may be the reason of the place of his Paint taken until to day in the National Gallery .
    Best regards

Patrick, thanks for sharing some history about this painting and Rosa Salvator himself. His philosophy is one that we all need to live by.
