Today I received a blog comment from Vanessa who runs the site On Teens Today. She started it as a teen (now she’s in her early twenties) when she saw so many of her friends making wrong decisions that led to terrible consequences. It is not a Christian site, but she is dedicated to helping parents and teens find ways to keep communication lines open. Here is what she says:

HOORAY! Finally, parenting advice from the kid’s perspective! It’s usually impossible to get more than one-word-answers from us, but here I hope that I, along with my 8 teen writers (age 13-17) can be honest about real issues that teens and pre-teens are dealing with, so parents can actually understand us (well at least a small part of our world)…and we can finally develop better relationships.

As much as I LOVE my freedom, I know that adolescents are often two steps ahead of parental controls and because of this, watched many of my friends make really, really bad decisions. So, we have decided to break open the door to our SECRET, terribly complex world and let you in. Ok, I am exaggerating just a tad, but I do truly believe that *if we help each other stay informed, we can stay safe, supported and become happier adults.*

Family Peacemaker n – Young people who work with families and other youth to help bridge the fundamental gap between parents and kids. Vanessa Van Petten and other teen mentors work as ‘family peacemakers’ in Los Angeles, CA and on the web to help families fight less and communicate more.

My Mission Statement: To improve parent-teen relationships by providing them with new perspectives, stories and neutral places to communicate. This will help families instill values and build strong relationships that promote healthy attitudes and lifestyle behaviors in this generation of young adults. To provide positive role models for young people.

Here is her site if you want to check it out: On Teens Today

Vanessa came across the Anita Renfroe Mom Video I posted a while back, and wrote to tell me that she had done one from the teen perspective. She asked if I might put it on my blog. Here it is:

If you don’t have teenagers, maybe you know someone who might need this site. Please feel free to forward it to them.

(If you want to see the original Anita Renfroe video, go to the search box on the top right and just put in her name or Mom’s Overture and it should come up.)
