The Distance Between Surrender And Vision

Hebrews 11:8

By faith Abraham, when he was called to go out into a place which he should after receive for an inheritance, obeyed; and he went out, not knowing whither he went.

Surrendering to God’s will does not mean you have a clarity on what it is. There is a time of waiting between surrender and vision. Instead of knowing to what we are surrendering, all we know is to WHOM we are surrendering. -Cary Schmidt-

It must have taken a huge amount of faith for Abraham to leave everything he knew so well to go to a land where he had no idea what he would do or even where he would settle.

Another HUGE thing is that God didn’t necessarily speak to Abraham’s family and tell them the same thing. He spoke to Abraham and expected him to obey even if the people around him didn’t understand.

God is good at telling people to do impossible things and expecting them to walk in obedience to His plans. No, most of the time you won’t understand everything about it from the start, but it is important that you take the first step.

At one point God opened the door for me to get a certain job that I absolutely did not want; I had a bad experience in a similar job several years earlier and based my reaction totally on my negative experience. In hindsight I am sorry to say that for about a week I told God that I did not want this job and was almost depressed that He wanted me to do it.

When I finally decided to surrender to God’s plan, it didn’t take me long to realize that He had something much better in mind than anything my old job had ever been. While it had been a very menial one that I only wanted to use as a stepping stone to something better, this job turned out to be anything but menial. I guess God just wanted to see if I would be obedient.

There is always a time frame between what God tells you to do and when you actually start seeing results. After only a few months I could see that God had much more in mind than what I had thought, but I still had no idea what the end result would be. I’m not sure we ever get to that point, because God is continually changing and growing us. Sometimes we might not even realize that we have gotten to the end because God already has us started on something else.

We seem to pass one test and He says, “Good! You passed, now I have another one for you.”

I think God always has something better in mind than anything we could ever imagine. The problem is that most of the time we make grand plans from our very limited and very near-sighted vision. We think what we have planned is awesome while God shakes His head mournfully thinking that He had something much better in mind if we would only accept it.

The problem is, most of us live and function in a microwave society – meaning, I WANT THIS RIGHT NOW, and I certainly don’t want to wait on something that I don’t even know what it is when I can have this great thing NOW that I can physically see.

Satan is a master at enticing you with something very good to keep you from getting God’s best. He knows that the VERY BEST is the place where you can start to walk in God’s Power. The difference will be huge in the long run as far as your walk with God.

You may not know where you are going, but you can always trust God to know what is best and bring it forth at exactly the right time. Don’t live a menial life when you can live one that is exciting beyond your wildest dreams!
