Time – How the Jewish Day Was Divided

The Jews divided the day into 12 equal parts,
beginning at 6 am and ending at 6 pm. The
Babylonians were the first to adopt this
division of time. According to Herodotus,
the Greeks adopted this practice from the
Babylonians.

So it is possible the Jews adopted the custom
while in captivity in Babylon. The term for
hour (sha’ah) occurs in Daniel 3: 6 and 5: 5
In the NT the third, sixth, and ninth hours
(hora) are frequently mentioned.
