Get rid of the unnecessary things so that you can have time to do the best things.
It is very easy to fill your free time each day doing trivial things that are only time-fillers and don’t do anything at all to make you a better person, advance you in a position at work, or help you to grow as a Christian.
As long as your day is filled with “stuff” God can’t give you His Very Best. Discipline is something that many people don’t have on a daily basis. It is one thing to work hard on an intense project for a week, but keeping it up day after day and week after week is another thing entirely.
I have wondered how CEOs of large companies have the time to get everything done. After I read about their work habits, I realized that they have disciplined themselves to concentrate on the most important things and let other people handle the things that are not as important or the things that they don’t have a real talent for doing.
Sanctification means set apart for something, so if you are set apart for a particular thing you make it top priority in your life with everything else coming under it. You WILL make the time to do whatever you want to do, so you must decide what that is and make the necessary changes in your life to accommodate that priority you have set.
God wants you to make Him a top priority by deciding that you will walk in obedience to Him. He wants to have a real relationship with you. I didn’t understand what that real relationship meant during my early Christian years. I felt that going to church and participating in all the activities there pleased God immensely. I don’t think I ever thought about there being much more than that to my relationship with Him.
Before I knew it I had filled my life with good “stuff” but it carried me like a huge wave into the realm of “religion” where I felt that all my good works were what pleased Him the most. I didn’t think about the fact that because I was a Christian the Holy Spirit now lived inside me and wanted to have a close relationship with me by showing me truths, helping me to become a discerner of things so I wouldn’t get caught in a trap, and IS a real, living being who wants to have a relationship with me like I would with my best friend each day of the week.
I never dreamed what a wonderful thing it would be until I experienced it firsthand. Wow, how awesome to not have to make a huge decision all on my own and wonder if I have made the right one, or wonder what would have happened if I had gone the other direction. Would things have been better?
When I follow the leading of the Holy Spirit I know totally and completely that I have taken the right direction because God always wants the best for me and would not lead me in the wrong direction on purpose.
One person can never be good at everything, and can only fit so many things into a single day. The Holy Spirit knows which of those things are the most important, and which ones will lead to the greatest benefit.
Whether you realize it or not, to get the best out of each day you will have to cut out the less important things, and it has nothing to do with your age. Just because you might be retired does not mean that God will not be able to use you in a dramatic way.
Age has absolutely nothing to do with setting priorities so that you can walk in obedience to God and go down the path He leads. Don’t let anything stop you from getting His Best, especially if you have never had it before now.
