Romans 6: 15-18
The Message (MSG)
What Is True Freedom?
15-18 So, since we’re out from under the old tyranny, does that mean we can live any old way we want? Since we’re free in the freedom of God, can we do anything that comes to mind? Hardly. You know well enough from your own experience that there are some acts of so-called freedom that destroy freedom. Offer yourselves to sin, for instance, and it’s your last free act. But offer yourselves to the ways of God and the freedom never quits. All your lives you’ve let sin tell you what to do. But thank God you’ve started listening to a new master, one whose commands set you free to live openly in his freedom!
Even though we don’t like to think about it in that way, we are all a slave to either sin or righteousness and have chosen a master, whether voluntarily or involuntarily. There is no neutral territory as far as God is concerned. So a change in acts of obedience indicates a change in your master.
It is amazing how Satan will let you think that you are in total control of your “fate and destiny” when actually nothing is further from the truth. God will never lie to you, but it certainly doesn’t bother Satan to tell you a huge lie. In fact, he will continue to lie to you as long as you allow it.
Many people believe that they are in control of their own destiny, yet they walk unknowingly each day down exactly the path that Satan would have them go, all the while thinking that their thoughts and actions are totally their own.
The verses above remind me of the very first puppets that had large and very noticeable strings attached to them. They were pretty crude looking and it was obvious that they were puppets that were controlled by a person who stood above them moving their hands and body to get the desired results.
Even though they started out crude and unsophisticated, they are now so sophisticated that the strings controlling them can barely be seen with the naked eye.
This is the way of Satan.
The longer you let him control you, the more you succumb to his ways without even knowing that he has become the puppet master. Then once you find out, it is very difficult to break away from his control. It is possible to do so, but you really have to set your mind to do it and be prepared for a huge attack from Satan, who does not want you to become free – EVER.
On the other hand, God wants the very best for your life and for your family. It is true that He does things very differently than you might think, but in the end the way He does things is usually much better than the plan you had in mind.
Break free from those chains that have ensnared you and learn to walk in freedom in Christ. Remember, you have a master even if you don’t want to admit it.
The truth is: Satan always wants to destroy you and God wants the best for you.
John 10: 10
The thief cometh not, but for to steal, and to kill, and to destroy: I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly.
Doesn’t abundant life sound much better than someone who wants to steal, kill, and destroy your life?
I love what the Dake’s Bible Commentary says about the following verse: “But thank God you’ve started listening to a new master, one whose commands set you free to live openly in his freedom!”
Here Christianity is pictured under the form of a mould or die into which men are cast, and from which they are stamped with the image of God and Christ and are made the holiness of God by the Holy Spirit. They are cast into the mold of doctrine and the Word of God is stamped on the heart.
What an awesome way to live – with the Word of God stamped on your heart so you won’t go astray, and to allow the Holy Spirit to mold you into the person God wants you to be!
